TWIN LAKES BURERA AND RUHONDO

Lake Burera and Lake Ruhondo are the two most beautiful lakes of Rwanda. These lakes located at the base of volcano Muhabura and close to the border with Uganda and Musanze district of Rwanda. They are surrounded by steep hills and large waterfalls with a backdrop of the Virunga volcanic mountains. These twin lakes are great spots to be visited after watching the gorillas in the Rwandan mountains. Lakes Burera and Ruhondo are close to the gorilla-tracking centre of Ruhengeri , Burera and Ruhondo are popular with tourists. They offer magnificent views over the whole of the Virunga Volcanoes Walking and biking, birdwatching are possible in the hills and at some points around the lakes, but due to the very steep character of the landscape At Lake Ruhondo visitors can hire a boat to go on a scenic lake cruise and have an opportunity to spot many waterbirds such as herons, kingfishers, cormorants, darters, hammerkops, stalks, cranes etc.

Burera and Ruhondo are separated by a 1km wide strip of land (thought to be an ancient lava flow from Sabyinyo).
