Gorillas in the Mist

Day 1:

On your arrival at Kigali International Airport you will be welcomed by one of our experienced drivers. They will drive you to your hotel. This drive is two hours long through stunning Rwandan countryside. During this drive there will be a few short stops so you have the opportunity to take some souvenir photographs. Accommodation at either Gorillas Nest or Muhabura Hotel. (B/B/L/D).

Day 2:

After an early breakfast you will be driven to Volcanoes National Park Headquarters at Kinigi where you will meet your guide and receive final instructions for your gorilla visit. One track takes approximately 2-3 hours, with a maximum of 1 hour with the gorillas. You will be driven back to the hotel for lunch. In the afternoon you will visit the beautiful Lakes Burera and Ruhondo. Accommodation at Gorillas Nest or Muharbura Hotel. (B/B/L/D).

Day 3:

Another early breakfast, after which you will have another chance to visit the incredible gorillas. In the afternoon, you will be driven back to Kigali. Accommodation at either Perle motel or Mille collines. (B/B/L/D).

Day 4:

If your flight leaves in the afternoon, you will be taken on a tour of Rwanda’s capital city, Kigali. If there is enough time you will get the chance to visit the Twa pygmy tribe who specialise in making fired clay pots. This is a great opportunity to buy some gifts before being driven back to the airport.

Camping in Akagera

Day 1:

On your arrival at Kigali International Airport you will be welcomed by one of our experienced drivers and driven to your hotel. Accommodation at Perle motel/ Serena Kigali or Hotel des Mille collines. (B/B/L/D)

Day 2:

You will be driven from Kigali to Kibungo. On the way you will stop for a while to view the workmanship of ‘imigongo’ which is Kinyarwandan for pictures made from cowpat! You will also view the impressive Rusumo Waterfall. You will reach Akagera National Park and be accommodated under tents near the Park’s other inhabitants; hippopotami, zebras and elephants.

Day 3:

After an early start you will be driven in search of the elephants, antelope, giraffes and other animals in the park. After a late breakfast you will have the chance to cool off and relax by the pool. You will sleep under the stars in tents again. (B/B/L/D)

Day 4:

After breakfast you will be driven back to Kigali with a stop at the beautiful Muhazi Lake. On reaching Kigali your driver will take you on a tour of the city and there will be the chance to do some shopping before you are driven back to the airport.

Kivu Lake Shore and Gorillas in the Mist:

Day 1:

On your arrival at Kigali International Airport you will be welcomed and driven to Gisenyi through the beautiful Rwandan countryside. There will be a few short stops enabling you to take some souvenir photos. After a short tour of Gisenyi you will be taken to the beach where you can relax on Lake Kivu’s shore, with its fantastic view of the Congo Mountains. Accommodation at Palm Garden Resort (B/B/L/D).

Day 2:

After an early breakfast you will be taken to the Volcanoes National Park Headquarters to meet your guide and for some last minute information before your visit with the gorillas. The track will take approximately 2-3 hours, with a maximum of 1 hour with the gorillas. You will then be taken back to your hotel in Ruhengeri for lunch. In the afternoon you will be taken to discover the beautiful twin lakes of Burera and Ruhondo. Accommodation at either Gorillas Nest or Muhabura Hotel. (B/B/L/D)

Day 3:

Another early breakfast and another unforgettable experience visiting the gorillas. Accomodation at Gorillas Nest or Muhabura Hotel. (B/B/L/D)

Day 4:

After breakfast you will go in search of bronzed monkeys found in the forest of bamboos. You will then be driven back to Kigali and be taken on a tour of the city in the afternoon. Accomodation at the hotel of your choice. (B/B/L/D)

Day 5:

If your flight is in the afternoon, you will spend the morning visiting the Twa pygmy tribe who specialise in making fired clay pots. After lunch you will have the chance to do some shopping before being driven to the airport. (B/B/L)

Museum and Walking Tour in Nyungwe Forest

Day 1:

Day 2:

After breakfast you will be driven to Butare via a stop at Nyanza to visit the Royal Palace. Then you will be taken on a guided visit to the National Museum at Butare and experience some traditional Intore dancing (the dance viewed depends on the timetable). Accommodation at Ibis Hotel. (B/B/L/D)

Day 3:

After breakfast you will be driven to Uwinka tourist centre where you will receive the necessary instructions for a trek in the mountain forest. Then you will enter Nyungwe Forest with a guide and go in search of Colobus Monkets. Accommodation at Gisakura Guest House. (B/B/L/D)

Day 4:

After an early breakfast you will be driven back to the forest in search of chimpanzees. You will be driven back to the hotel for lunch and then to Kigali in the afternoon. If there is time you will then visit craftsmen who are specialised in creating fired clay pots and dance. Accommodation at Perle motel. (B/B/L/D)

Day 5:

You will be taken on a tour of Kigali where you will get the chance to do some shopping before being taken to the airport. Cost

Explore Rwanda by bicycle

Mercator Assistance Tours and Safaris is able to suggest interesting circuits in and around Rwanda which can be influenced by your physical and financial capacities. We can organise long circuits emulating the Tour de Rwanda for serious or professional cyclists, and short circuits for amateur and pleasure cyclists.

The following is an example of a possible circuit for professional cyclists wanting to explore the whole country by bicycle:

Day 1: Kigali - Butare via main and non-tarred roads. Accommodation at Butare.

Day 2: Butare - Cyangugu via Gikongoro. Accommodation at Gisakura Lodge. Option to visit Nyungwe National Park.

Day 3: Cyangug - Kibuye via non-tarred road. Accommodation at Kibuye on Lake Kivu's shore.

Day 4: Kibuye - Gisenyi via road alongside coffee plantations. Accommodation at Palm Garden Resort, Gisenyi.

Day 5: Gisenyi - Ruhengeri. Accommodation at Ruhengeri. Option to stay an extra day to visit the gorillas.

Day 6: Ruhengeri - Byumba via Lakes Bulera and Ruhondo. Accommodation at Byumba.

Day 7: Byumba - Kigali via either main road or by dirt tracks crossing Lake Muhazi by boat. Accommodation at Kigali.

Day 8: Visiting and touring Kigali before transfer to the airport.

The cost of this will vary depending on the length of the tour and the sites and activities included. Cycle tours are always accompanied by a car carrying cyclists' luggage, bottled water and food, as well as a doctor.

Explore Rwanda on foot

Mercator Tours and Safaris is planning to offer circuits which will allow you to discover some parts of Rwanda on foot.

Mount Kigali : 10 km

The walkers will head for Nyamirambo. Toward the end of the main road, they will enter the bush of Mount Kigali. The walk to the top of the mountain offers fantastic views across Kigali.

Gasabo, the origin of Rwanda: 20 km

The walkers will start from Nyarutarama and then will head for DW (Deutch Well Radio Antenna). Going up toward the top of Gasabo mount. Back to Nyarutarama. (NOTE: come with clean drinking water)

Nyarutarama and Nyabugogo Valley 10 km

The walkers will start from Nyarutarama, and then will go down toward Gaculiro in order to head for Nyabugogo Valley. We will end the stroll by going across sugar cane fields. If there is enough time, we will probably visit Kabuye Sugar Factory.
